Nature’s Recipe Dog Food Review: Grain Free
First we’ll look at the grain free variety of this popular dog food! This grain free dog food promises to never contain soy, wheat, grains, or beef. So if your pup is sensitive to any of those ingredients we’re off to a good start. All of their grain free recipes also include pumpkin which often aids in digestion. This is a great ingredient for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Let’s take a look at the ingredients for the Nature’s Recipe Grain Free Salmon, Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Recipe.
Salmon, Potatoes, Pea Protein, Salmon Meal, Peas, Sweet Potatoes, Poultry Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Pumpkin, Apples, Natural Flavor, Tomato Pomace, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Inositol, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Beta-carotene, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Iron Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Lactic Acid, Citric Acid (Used as a Preservative), Yucca Schidigera Extract, Rosemary Extract.
The first ingredient on our list salmon. It’s always a good sign to see a high quality protein as the first item on the list as the ingredients are listed by matter of importance or the most prevalent item in the recipe. Next on the list is potatoes which is fine for most pups, but can be an allergen for some. If your pup has known problems with this starchy vegetable this might not be the best food for them. They added additional protein to this food by means of pea protein and salmon meal which are fine choices.
Peas are typically easy for most dogs to digest, and the salmon meal adds a nice protein boost. A protein meal is a meat that has been dehydrated. All of the moisture has been removed which means the finished product contains around 4-5 times the nutritional benefit of a whole meat product. There’s also some healthy fruits and vegetables like pumpkin and apples. Most of the rest of the ingredients are added vitamins which is great. The ingredients for this food are very high quality.

In this chart you can see the guaranteed nutritional analysis for the Nature’s Grain Free Dog Food. This is a pretty good nutritional ratio. There’s a decent amount of protein and fat. There are several dog foods that provide a much higher protein and fat ratio if that’s what you’re after, but this one is still good. If your dog is a very active working dog you may want more protein and fat, but this is fine for your average pooch.

My doberman has allergies and is sensitive to almost everything. This with its limited ingredients does her very well. One of my miniature pinchers is very picky and typically only eats if she needs to, not this! She scarfs it up. Absolutely the best food we have ever had our dogs on…. We have tried Science Diet, Blue Buffalo and several other grain and limited ingredient foods. This is the best. – William
My dog has some GI issues and my vet recommended a low-residue food. My dog is a picky eater but he LOVES this food. The price here is much cheaper than Chewy.com, Petsmart and most places online. Very happy with my purchase. – Grant
Nature’s Recipe Dog Food Review: Easy To Digest
This food is made to be gentle on your dog’s stomach. It includes additional fiber and Prebiotics to aid in digestion and to avoid common stomach problems. This food is free from beef, corn and wheat which are common problem areas for many dogs. It does include chicken though which a lot of dogs have problems with as well. While they do have a “fish flavor” for this food it contains chicken fat, so don’t buy it if your dog is poultry intolerant! Let’s take a look at the ingredients for the Chicken Meal, Rice and Barley Flavor.
Chicken Meal, Rice, Barley, Oatmeal, Poultry Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Natural Flavor, Tomato Pomace, Salt, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Inulin, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin C], Inositol, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, D-calcium pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Beta Carotene, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Yeast Culture, Lactic Acid, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Choline Chloride, Citric Acid (Used as a Preservative), Rosemary Extract.
The first ingredient is chicken meal. This particular recipe does not contain a whole meat product, but only the dehydrated protein meal. There’s nothing wrong with that really. If you’re concerned about grain consumption you should go with the grain free version that was first up on the list. This recipe has rice, barley and oatmeal which is a good deal of carbohydrates.

Above you can see the nutritional analysis for this particular food. This one may possibly have the lowest protein and fat percentage of any dog food I’ve reviewed. Which I don’t care for. The fiber is a little higher, but I’d still probably go with the grain free dog food instead for this brand, but this might be good for dogs that are sensitive to too much protein in their diets.
Amazon Customer Easy To Digest Nature’s Recipe Dog Food Review
New rescue dog, touchy stomach. Tried to give her the quality food I feed my Lab, but her stomach is just too sensitive. Found this food in a retail store and purchased a small bag to try it out. It worked!! Since I live 40 minutes from any store I of course went to Amazon and found the food there. Am very happy with this product…oh and so is my dog. – Larry
Great price and product. My yellow Labrador has had some digestive issues before. He was on a different brand of dog food which worked for a while. He started getting diarrhea and we switched to this brand. This food has been great for his sensitive stomach and he has no problems since. Makes it a lot easier to order the big bags online and get it delivered to your door. – David

First off the bat are chicken and chicken meal. As long as your dog does not have a poultry intolerance these are high quality ingredients that most dogs love. These provide excellent sources of protein and quality fats for your dog. This recipe also features potatoes which can be a problem for some pups, but not for most. I mention it only so that you’re aware of it if your dog has problems with this vegetable. This recipe also provides some excellent fruits and veggies in the form of peas, sweet potatoes, apples and cranberries which are typically easy to digest.

Here you can see the nutritional breakdown for this food. The protein and fat ratio is decent, but it could stand to be a little higher. Overall this is fairly high quality food, and an excellent choice as long as you’re not looking to give your dog a very high protein diet. There’s better foods for that if you are. For your average pup that wants to eat a little cleaner this is an excellent choice!

Our dogs thrive on this food! It is nutritionally dense, full of good smells and the dogs have not been in better health since we started them on this food. From our 17 year old Havanese to our 2 year old greyhound mix, the food offers them plenty of nutrition for great energy, bright eyes and shiny coats. We buy the small kibble and it suits all the dogs. – Linda
My dog absolutely loves this food. We adopted a 1 year old poodle, and she was very finicky and picky when we first got her. We later found out that was because many foods upset her stomach. We began feeding her this food at the recommendation of a customer at a pet store. Our CoCo first began eating it mixed with canned pumpkin at the recommendation of our vet. She loved it, and we were able to gradually reduce the amount of pumpkin. Now she eats it dry. It has caused her no stomach upset, and she is thriving. She has put on a little weight, and she is definitely full of energy. – Gertie
